Modern Hat Rack

It’s no secret that Ikea makes some really aesthetically pleasing furniture and decorations. I saw a hat rack on their website that I really liked. I checked the inventory for the closest store to me (about 3 hours away) and they were sold out. I checked a few other stores and they were all sold out. After being disappointed a few times, trying to find an excuse to get out of town and buy a $10 item, I decided to just go ahead and build it. It looked simple enough and was definitely cheaper than just the gas to drive 3 hours away.

I built the hat rack out of a single 6ft 2×4. I, first, cut it down to 36″, cut the rounded edges off, and ripped it to a 1.5″ square pole. This will be the body of the hat rack. Then, I cut 6 pieces of the squared 2×4 to about 5-6″, I didn’t really measure, just went with what looked right. I cut off the end of the hooks at 45 degrees and marked where they will line up with the body. I drilled through the body with a small drill bit, then drilled about half way through the body with a 3/8″ drill bit so that I could recess the screws and plug the hole with a dowel. Then, I glued and screwed everything together and set it aside to dry while I worked on a way to hang it on the wall. Again, I used some of the squared 2×4 to recess the wall hangers in to. I used my drill press to drill just far enough down so that the hangers sat flush with the wood. This makes the whole hat rack sit flush on the wall. After the glue dried on the body, I glued and screwed the block with the wall hangers to the body and hung the whole thing up.

It came out exactly as I’d hoped. The hat rack sits about 1.5″ out from the wall and the wall hangers are more than sturdy enough. What I like most about this project, is that you could make it as long or as short as you like and put as many or as few hooks on it as you like, not to mention how cheap it was to build.
